There's no problem for companies to innovate, but there's a massive flaw.

Copyrights.

Digital subscriptions are nice and all, but it does nothing if you are in a country where the company has no right to air/sell the work.

@Kabitzin

1 - I'm with you 100%. I've been on Rhapsody and Netflix for years now, and I love it. Considering the poor rewatch value of a lot of anime (and how little I rewatch the stuff that does have value), this would be a great option. Of course there's Crunchyroll, but it's pretty limited and as soon as you want to take it with you, you have to actually buy it.

2 - yes. I'm not sure that you or I correspond to what audio track the normal DVD-buying populace sets to when they pop it in though. I have no idea... it's obvious that most anibloggers see it that way but head to ANN or AoDVD forums for even a second and you'll see people who don't agree with us at all.

3 - LOLs. Promo codes ahoy! As for hating the software, it's much nicer on a mac, they really did a number on the windows version. But yeah, the store navigation alone is reason enough to hate it, and music management can be a hassle.

@Joe

I feel you. I was looking for stuff to take on a trip, and realized I had DVDs of Ergo Proxy waiting for me to rip and put on my iPhone, so I did that instead. With the subtitle track :P

@newgeekphilosopher

That's an interesting thought. You guys are going to have a hard time getting up to speed with internet caps like that. It's a perfect example of how the telecoms are stifling innovation with their greed.

@Schyler

I would be a LOT more open to renting than I am to buying. $2 means I have these files sitting around, feels like I wasted my money if I don't keep them, etc. I wouldn't say we should rule out TV series rentals altogether, it's just a matter of companies giving iTunes the right to rent them. And Apple has done a decent job in the past of dictating how it's gonna be.

This post is pretty ironic for me. I spent a good portion of last night diggig around through iTunes for anime or something to watch whilst on my epic trip to WA today. My motivation came from the fact that it's a pain in the ass to convert videos to an iPhone format and it takes entirely to long. Despite the fact that I found a damn good program for it.

I figured iTunes has already compatible files, so why not check it out? Well, like you said, the navigation for the iTunes store is fucking terrible. And honestly, there isn't a huge selection for the price charged per episode. That said, maybe in the future it'll be a much sexier option, especially for those of us weilding iPods and iPhones.

I did end up renting 4 movies from them though. And honestly, rented anime for a portion of the purchase fee would be fantastic in my book. Doubt they'll go for it though.

I live in Australia so it takes forever for anime to be licensed here, digital distribution or not. On the other hand once Madman Entertainment licenses something it stays in print here, so we've been enjoying legal Captain Harlock and the (as you have mentioned) hard to find in America End of Evangelion for years. We might not have licensed ARIA yet but we're getting there. I still buy DVDs though since Australians only have 20 Gig download caps in our "Failstralian internetz" as Shin calls it.

Oh well. At least we were enjoying Akira while you Yanks were fussing over it being out of print, but now you lucky bastards have it on Blu-Ray while we do not T______T.

Yeah, it's a great idea in concept, but I don't see myself snapping at the possibility for a while. Not just for anime, but all forms of visual media. Music, I don't mind; iTunes is so convenient that is sinful. But when it comes to Movies and TV, I can't justify buying the digital version when I could have a hard copy. Long story short, I buy the DVDs and then rip them. This means I have legitimate copies, with both subs and dubs, extra features, plus a digital version I can use with my iPod touch and Apple TV.

I like where this is going, but here is what I still want to see:

1) Subscription service: I don't care about the DRM and I never rewatch anime anyway. I really prefer subscription services for music, and would like to see this option with anime, too.

2) Subs: Because I doubt the pay will ever be good enough for anime to attract enough good English-speaking VA.

3) Free pass for reviewers: For obvious reasons =3.

I personally hate iTunes (software), but I like how they put forth ideas for everyone else to copy.
