The start of a wild ride
Soul Eater has turned out to be a monumentally entertaining shounen action/adventure, with a minimum of the fillers and talk-through-battles syndrome that plague other series of the genre. The characters are good, the humor is silly but spot-on, and of course the action is rad. But when I first saw the opening episode, I had no idea what I was in for, and Bones capitalized on that like no one in recent memory.

The opening episode of Soul Eater will forever stick out in my mind as “the right way to start a series.” Unlike sneaky beginnings like Ga-Rei, Soul Eater doesn’t rely on confusing its audience. Everything’s pretty straightforward, it’s just an incredible rush of excitement. The mysterious opening monologue that segues into an OP that’s made of wild anticipation, the crazy character designs and manic fighting, all the way to the “Ikouze!” closing song — it all added up to a total experience that I absolutely had to watch again to believe. And then I had to show it to mai waifu, who was hooked just as fast.
Soul Eater’s greatest strength may have been its ability to maintain, but its most standout moment will probably always be its first. And yes, I realize that it’s not so much a moment as 22 moments, each a minute long, but it’s my blog, and you go to hell.

I have to agree with you. In took me a while to get used to the show art, but after that I loved it. Great and intense battles, great animation, great voice acting, it’s one of my favorite shounen. N
ow that the show will be diverging from the manga I just hope it retains is quality
Here’s hoping FUNimation picks up the license!
Wait till Excalibur shows up.
soulstrider - I didn’t know it was deviating from the manga. I have faith in bones.
choujin – Nah, let’s just hope they went around issuing C&D’s just for the hell of it, like they have been for all the other shit lately. Pretty sure Funi’s job lately is to ensure that we never see any new series via legitimate or illegitimate means.
The Sojourner – I don’t understand the hate.
EXCALIBUUUUUR
EXCALIBUUUUR
FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM
I’M LOOKING FOR HIM
I’M GOING TO CALIFORNIAAAAAAAA
Oh how I adore this show. That first fight was just amazing, still might be my favourite of the year. I thought the second episode was even better though – and that feeling of raising bar was what really made me believe in this series.
Liking the screencap you used muchly.
Plus,

It only deviates after ep 36 anyway it’s the same studio who did FMA so I am not worrying
If Soul Eater can maintain it’s standards throughout the rest of its run, officially the best shounen I have ever seen. YOU CAN DO IT, SE!
Thanks for that, coburn. I feel like I’m the only person who watched that preview when it first aired and actually enjoyed the prospect of another Excalibur episode. Wasn’t as good as the life story one, though.
Soulstrider – I think bones’ track record definitely speaks for itself. Their original stories (Eureka 7, RahXephon) are awesome enough that I’m sure they can deviate all they want.
Omisyth – For me that’s not too hard, I’m not normally a fan of the genre, but I do think you’re right.
