I’m not hungry.

Week-o-bento

So… bitches be tryin to cook, see, but the food, it’s bad, right? And “comedy” ensues. Between episodes three and four we have:

  • Kanokon’s bento battle between Chizuru and Ezumori
  • To Love-RU’s intergalactic cuisine lesson, featuring implied old-school tentacle rape and absolutely horrible CG work
  • The Special A Rice Cannonball meltdown
  • Naeka’s poison shrimp on Kamen No Maid Guy
  • Am I missing anything? Failed blood cocktail on Vampire Knight? Ninja Nigiri gone wrong on Nabari No Ou? Someone choke on a bullet bento in Golgo 13?

Seriously, I know we enjoy a medium where there are tried and true elements, but the bento nonsense… If I were a woman I’m not sure how I’d feel about it.

Like this, perhaps.

Is the land that’s a few hours into the future for us yanks really so stuck in the past when it comes to gender relations, or is it just anime?

I believe I mentioned 7 comments. These are they (them?)

  1. Jason says:

For us gaijin, what is bento?

  2. otou-san says:

Most simply, a lunchbox, or rather a boxed lunch. Usually a marvel of the Japanese ability to pack a lot of stuff into a small area efficiently. The wife has one, but speaking of gaijin, I don’t pack stuff in in very efficiently.

I’m not sure to what degree the custom of a girl packing a bento for the boy she likes is a real deal, or just an anime convention, but it is a common theme. And apparently, it’s a common week 3 and 4 theme this season.

  3. Jason says:

Should add that to the glossary.

I’ve seen that in a few anime, too. Although I couldn’t tell you if they were the third episodes or not. In Ai Yaori Aoshi(sp?), the love interest (I know her name, just don’t know how it’s spelled) packs lunches for the boy she likes, but that eventually leads to her packing lunches for everyone in the house.

  4. onizuka-gto says:

    It’s just anime. trust me.
Men make bento too, if they bother to make them in first place.
We make dammn good bento too. well, mine anyway.
    :)
But don’t worry, majority of those girls will become just as lazy as us men and just buy stuff for lunch. …..which come to think of it,  probably explain the food poisoning, lack of experience does that sometimes.

  5. Shin says:

I actually have a bento box which I used to take to college to show everyone I was a weaboo, but then the novelty wore off, since the food got cold by the time I opened it which wasn’t very appetizing.

  6. Jason says:

    What’s a weaboo?

Sheesh, I feel like I should take an anime vocabulary class or something…
